TMA Contemporary at the Trout Museum of Art

The Trout Museum of Art hosted its annual TMA Contemporary Juried Exhibition with an opening reception on June 10, 2023. More than 1,200 artworks were submitted by 416 artists from across the state of Wisconsin. 106 artists being accepted.

The evening was filled with pride, positive energy, great conversations, and a well-balanced curated exhibition that presented an array of contemporary works from recent art graduates to established artists. The exhibition had art for everyone. Works range from fiber arts to sculpture, photography to collage, video to paintings, and installation to mixed media works.

TMA Contemporary is the Trout Museum of Art’s annual juried exhibition showcasing Wisconsin’s top visual artists. Works exemplify the cutting-edge art being created by artists across the state today.

Each year, all Wisconsin artists working in any medium are invited to apply with up to three works. Jurors select artists based on their artistic quality and innovative ideas. Artists may draw inspiration from the world around them, personal narrative, the environment, or their inner feelings and imagination. Spanning all three floors of the museum, TMA Contemporary represents a wide spectrum of media and creative perspectives.

Jurors Frank Juárez, Riley Niemack, and Christina Turner participated in three separate sessions to determine this year’s roster of artists and selecting the 2023 TMA Contemporary award recipients. This year’s exhibition is sponsored by Oh, Snap! Pickling Co with a sponsorship of $10,000 awarded to the following artists:

  • Annmarie Suglio (Juror Favorite -Frank Juarez +$1,000)
  • Brittany Sievers (Juror Favorite – Riley Niemack + $1,000)
  • Christian Birk (Juror Favorite – Christina Turner +$1,000)
  • Jeff Baenen (Third Place + $1,000)
  • Tomiko Jones (Second Place + $1,500)
  • Brandom Terres-Sanchez (First Place + $2,000)
  • Amy Cannestra (Best of Show + Solo Show in 2024 + $2,500)

Join the jurors of TMA Contemporary as they discuss the 2023 winning works and their decision-making process for accepted works. TMA Talks are free to museum members and are approximately 1 hour.

Due to a scheduling conflict, this event date changed from June 24 to July 29.
