When I moved to Sheboygan in 2004 one of my goals was to find artists to hang out with. It wasn’t until 2005 when I met artist, Dale Knaak at EBCO in Sheboygan. I had asked him if he knew of any local art groups I could join. Sheboygan is the third city that I have lived in so I was a bit surprised to find out that there was not such a group. Although there was no ‘art group’ there were artists. This was good!
I came to a pivotal moment in my life when I asked myself, “why should I go to another city to find opportunities as an artist?” “Why not create them here?” This became the beginning of this journey. As they say, the rest is history.
Fast forwarding to today – it is amazing to see the visual arts in Sheboygan County continue to flourish. You have those that have been around for a long time such as the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Plymouth Arts Center, Two Fish Gallery, and Z Spot Espresso & Coffee. You also have those that have been around for a while such as the Sheboygan Visual Artists and ArtenSoul Studio. You have those that are a new addition such as the Lakeshore Art Supplies, Knaak + Juarez Studio, Liz Ann Lange Studio, and Eighty Art & Design.
With this in mind, “I believe a community is not defined by the entity of one, but rather as a whole”. In order to continue to move into the future, we need to support each other today.
This book, “Building Art Community: Celebrating 10 year of local visual arts (2007-2017)” is about celebrating the passion for art. Art is not only a powerful medium that impacts our own wellness, but also brings others together to experience the creativity, beauty, and inspiration we find in our own community.
