Milwaukee, WI – For over fifteen years, Andy Newman built a career as a Washington, D.C. attorney. Then a friend handed him a set of paints as a gift — and everything changed. What began as a hobby quickly became a calling. At 36, Newman made the leap from courtroom to canvas, later reflecting simply: *”I much more enjoy painting than I do trooping to the office every day.”
Today, Newman works primarily in oil, moving fluidly between pastels, acrylics, and colored pencil. His subjects range across landscape, abstraction, and the figure — often layering the three together in compositions that feel both grounded and unexpected. That instinct to blend genres gives his work a restless, searching quality, as if each canvas is negotiating between representation and feeling.

His influences read like a survey of the artists who taught the 19th and 20th centuries how to look: the quiet stillness of Giorgio Morandi, the solitary light of Edward Hopper, the raw color of Maurice de Vlaminck. Further back, he finds kinship with the Baroque masters Georges de La Tour and Caravaggio — painters who understood that shadow could be as expressive as light. Newman’s work is held in more than ten galleries across Europe and North America. He maintains his studio at the Umbrella Arts Center in Concord, Massachusetts.
For this pop-up presentation in the Parlor, JK Art House offers an intimate look at an artist whose path to painting was anything but conventional — and whose work carries the discipline of a former life alongside the freedom of the one he chose.
This exhibition also marks the launch of **Small Treasures**, JK Art House’s new annual exhibition celebrating accessible, collectible-scale artwork. In celebration of the kickoff, enjoy **5% off any piece priced at $2,000 or under** throughout the run of the show.
