The Center for the Visual Arts will host a public reception on Friday, May 10th from 5 -7 p.m. for a new community project done in partnership with NTC Alternative High and the NTC Welding program, funded in part by the Community Foundation of Northcentral Wisconsin. This project, born out of the idea to increase public art in downtown Wausau was brought together by the CVA and NTC’s Veronica Hope. Together, they teamed up with the NTC Alternative High to provide public art installations in the CVA’s Outdoor Learning Studio, formerly referenced as the courtyard. This installation includes one large walk through arch with bench seating as well as various welded garden art.

The Center for Visual Arts has worked to create programming around the project, ensuring the alternative high students receive a well-rounded experience. Aside from the incredible experience and opportunity they had to work on this project with NTC’s Welding program and local businesses, they also attended a free stained glass workshop with the CVA. Together, they learned a new art form and skill and created garden stakes and panels that coordinate with the sculpture they designed and welded.

Join the CVA to celebrate the unveiling of the students’ hard work that provides the entire downtown community with beautiful art to enjoy, visit, and engage with. These pieces are not only sculptural public art installations, but they also serve as outdoor seating for our guests, particularly, our Summer Camp students each year who utilize the outdoor space as their break area for lunch, snack, and free time. This project has enhanced the outdoor learning environment for the CVA’s current programs and new programs, and has served as a unique project for the Alternative High which results in a highly visible project that will serve the community for decades. This project is the fusing of not only metals; but also of young minds, industries, and artistic mediums into a meaningful community project and partnership.

This project would not have been possible without the hard work of the Alternative High students, the NTC Welding program, and several community organizations that pitched in such as; ADC Equipment Innovations and J-Tech Powder Coating. Thanks to them, the community has new public art to enjoy, free of charge. Celebrate this project on Friday night, May 10th from 5-7pm. This reception is open to the public with appetizers and refreshments served. After the unveiling of the sculptures, they continue to be accessible by patrons and community members free of charge during operating hours.
