Artists’ Panel Discussion led by Fred Stonehouse: Saturday, May 16, 1:30 – 2:30 pm
This exhibition brings together contemporary Midwestern artists who explore the portrait as both a mirror and a metaphor. Their works range from the representational to the highly stylized, reflecting on how likeness, identity, and imagination coexist in modern portraiture.
T.L. Solien, LOST BOY, Flashe and Graphite on Paper, 30 x 22”
Drawing from Catherine Soussloff’s The Subject in Art: Portraiture and the Birth of the Modern, the exhibition considers her idea that portraits reveal both outward resemblance and inner spirit. These artists question what “truth” means in depicting a face or figure – whether through TL Solien’s fantastical, otherworldly characters or photographer Tom Jones’s deeply grounded portrayal of his Ho-Chunk community. Together, their works move fluidly along the continuum between realism and invention, reaffirming portraiture as a powerful lens for understanding what it means to see and be seen today.
