65th Annual Beloit & Vicinity Show at Wright Museum of Art

Frank Juárez

On June 3, 2023, the Wright Museum of Art hosted its annual Beloit & Vicinity Show in downtown Beloit, Wisconsin. This year brought about 100 submissions. A small quantity of submissions tends to bring the difficult task of selecting 25-30 works of art for this exhibition. This exhibition brought a diverse range of genres, media, and artistic processes. A small yet impactful show providing a snapshot of what is being created across Wisconsin and neighboring states.

Jurors Statement

It has been a great pleasure serving as jurors for the 65th Annual Beloit & Vicinity Show. It was exciting for us to see so many innovative ideas and styles represented among the submissions. Selecting intriguing, challenging, and excellent works from this pool was not difficult. The submissions represented ideas and concepts executed in a range of media, and spanned modes of thinking and making, from traditional to contemporary practices. The works we chose reflect a wide scope of styles and genres with a range of materials, from traditional painting to abstract sculpture. We went into this process making selections that reflected our taste and experience working in museums and galleries.

In reviewing the work, we broke down the pieces into categories such as: abstractions, narratives, composition, concept, technique, and materials. Ultimately, through all that organization, we chose what we loved.

Whether the work has a political, feminine, obscure, social or environmental bent, we chose pieces that were unique and spoke to us personally. These are the pieces that compelled us either aesthetically or mentally. In any juried exhibition, you don’t go into it curating. You choose what you think is the finest work that represents a range of ideas that will make a dynamic exhibition.

Thank you to the Wright Museum of Art for your commitment to maintaining the tradition of this exhibition that reinforces the importance of contemporary art.

Lastly, thank you and congratulations to all the talented artists for sharing your work with us and giving us a glimpse into your creative, thoughtful worlds.
